The Feds are investigating complains from 26 Jeep Commander owners whose vehicles allegedly stall unexpectedly, sometimes with loss of some or all lighting systems. This preliminary investigation could lead to the recall of more than 135,000 Jeep Commanders. [ Read More ]. Has this happened to you?
something that could be related to this or not. at different times, I and a friend driving my jeep 2006 5.7L Hemi commander have accidentaly shut off the vehicle while driving on a highway doing 70mph while in cruise control.
how this happens is like this. depending on how you sit, when you engage the cruise control, you remove your foot from the accelerator which brings your knee up rather close to the key ignition. if you have anything attached to your key chain such as other keys that dangle down, then all it takes is for you to move your knee to the right thereby knocking the key chain with the dangling keys which will in turn move the key in the ingnition to the OFF position, basically shutting off the engine while you are doing 70mph on the highway.
when this happens, you probably wouldn't realize that this is what just took place because you're too busy being a little freaked out about having just lost all engine power but the electrical still works. this has happened 3 times.
I have had similar accidental shut-offs (also 3 times). Bottomline is that the location of the ignition switch is perilously close to the driver's right knee, leaving it susceptible to being knocked into the off postion. I have taken to inserting the key "upside down" such that the attached keys dangle from the top to the Jeep key (and thus do not hang so low.) This helps, but the design flaw is clear.
The location of the ignition switch is a major problem since I too have had my right knee hit it and the vehicle shut down while on the highway. This has happened to me 3 times. I was lucky in that I got to re-start the engine while coasting and there wasn't that much traffic. I am also disgusted at the poor gas mileage around town with the 6 cylinder engine.
Im in my jeep as I type. Im online with wireless internet connection. My wife is driving. The jeep just stalled out and lost all power and lighting. Im on I-95 and we are going aprox. 70 miles an hour.
After stalling. She pulled to the side of the road, and restarted the engine, and we are back on the road.
She said this has happened another time. She said the other time, the steering wheel locked up.
I just came back from two different 2500+ mile trips and have had no problems stalling. I suspect the issue is specific to particular Commanders and is not representative of all of them.
Our 06 Commander stalled 3 times for no reason while slowing down at a gas station twice and at a stop sign once. I hope that they can figure out the problem because we love our car but we would hate to cause an accident because of the stalling problem. Is jeep doing a recall?
My Commander has stalled 4 times; twice pulling into parking spaces, once pulling onto a major road from a drive-thru, and this week it died while approaching a stop sign. all four times were identical where the car just loses all electrical and engine, no power brakes or steering. When I turn the ignition key, it starts right back up. The dealer has no idea what the problem is and said there is nothing posted form D/C about the problem. I just filed an official complaint with NTSB via their website. I suggest everyone do the same so they can see how many people this is really happening to. NTSB says their are 76 complaints so far.
same has happened to my jeep commander...4 times...kind of disturbing when you are not expecting it...biggest problem is loss of power steering and power brakes
My Jeep Commander that I purchased in 2006 had shut off when I had less than 2k miles on it. It has happened a half dozen times since. It has occurred at a top speed of 45 mph. This is very serious and dangerous! My dealership could not find the problem. I hope they recall!
Our 2006 Jeep Commander has stalled twice - both times at low speed resulting in total lockdown of the brakes and steering. Dealership says they can't find a problem. I called Jeep, filed a complaint with the National Highway Safety Commission. Jeep told me to get a second opinion from another dealership. This vehicle is not safe and I cannot in good conscience drive my family in it: we live in an urban area where a left hand turn would be lethal if it stalled (which it does unexpectedly).
my 2006 jeep commander with 4.7 v8 engine has stalled many times, iam scared it will cause me to have an accident. i took it to the jeep dealership and of sure enough they said they knew nothing of the problem.
I Have an 06 Commander with the 4.7 V8 and so far has stalled twice in the last week, electrical seems fine, but for what ever reason the engine just stalled out without warning, seems like a computer glich to me. Hope Chrysler does a recall soon. Also the vehicle had been trouble free for a whole year.
My right knee hit the ignition switch (keys) several times. Each time, the car's engine shut off. Once I was going 60+ on the highway! Who designed this thing!!!
I have a 2007 Jeep Commander that started having electrical issues at around 5k miles. While driving the vehicle teh instrument panel would suddenly act like I was on a slippery road and the check engine light would come on. Additionally it would say the transmission was over heating. Now at times all of the gauges die and today the vehicle will not start at all. I have taken it in three times for service. This last time they say it needs a new front end control module but that part is on a nationwide back order. I will be contacting a lawyer.
I purchase an '06 commander back in august of 2006. I had not had the vehicle for a couple of weeks and the engine stall on the freeway. Luckly I was in the slow lane in bumper to bumper traffic and as the engine shut off I had enough momentum to take me over to the shoulder. I was not sure of what had happenned and I thought I had done something wrong and I let it go. Then it happenned to me a year later but this time going 70 mph. I was lucky that no cars were around me and I was able to drive off to the shoulder. I took it to the dealer this time and they could not find anything. Then just recently I took the vehicle in for a battery problem and mentioned that the vehicle had stalled on me a third time. They did not even bother looking and told me that if the computer doesnt register a code then there is really nothing they can do. In all three times, the engine and all electronics go off. Very dangerous situation, I have been fortunate to be in the right place when this happens since this obviusly can cause a serious accident. Does anyone outer know if the NTSB or Jeep has found a resolution to this?
I have a 2007 Commander with 5.7-liter Hemi that has also experienced sporadic engine stalling while traveling at highway speed or while stopped. I've also experienced a bucking action at while traveling at highway speed or local speed. Dealer implemented Star solution # K05558363, but the condition persists. I've reported the problem to NHTSA and to Chrysler. The engine stalling problem has result in recalls of 2006 and some2008's. If you have a 2007 with the same problems report it to the NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236.
I have a 2007 Jeep Commander. I have had multiple issues with it stalling and having no throttle power at all. I can get in my Jeep and get a couple blocks from my highway, come to a stop sign, go to pull out on the highway and my vehicle stalls in the middle of my turn and I'm sitting in traffic. I usually have to throw my gear shifter into neutral or park before it becomes running again. I took it to my dealership thinking it was a transmission problem and they said it was a computer malfunction and they corrected it. WRONG!!! Not but two weeks later and I'm stalling out again. RECALL THE VEHICLE ALREADY!!!
I have a 2006 Jeep Commander with a 5.7 liter Hemi. I got it in 2006 and since then I have had problems with the engine cutting out. When I go to stop the brakes don't always work. Everything shuts off....I have also had more problems with everything shutting off: dash lights, radio, heat, etc...and the engines still run. I have reported this to Chrysler and they blew me off. I am going to call NHTSA and report this to them since chrysler wasn't able to help. I love my jeep but when that happens it makes me feel very unsafe and it scares me....especially since Im a nanny and I haul around a 2, 4 & 11 year old almost everyday.
same thing have a jeep commander that when drving it just pops out of gear afrter pulling over and putting it in park can drive again but has happened several times dargerous
I just bought my 2006 Commander a month ago, it has 38K miles. Today I was at a stop light and it shut off. I had no power, it was still in drive and the key was in the on position but I was unable to take off from the light. I placed the car in park and then turned it on and off twice before it finally decided to work.
Yeah, couple of things. Anybody banging the keys in the ignition of a Commander would have to be 7 foot tall and riding far, *far* closer than they should be!! I'm 6 ft. 2 in. and my knees are a good 7 inches away from the keys dangling from the key chain. And the ignition is in the same position as most vehicles. I own an '07 Commander. Other than the crummy gas mileage, it's been fairly decent.
We own a 2007 Jeep Commander- and today on the way back from Christmas the vehicle stalled while driving 60+ on a icy road. The lights stayed on but we had no power and the power steering was gone. Scary to say the least. Is there a fix or recall?
I have a 2006 Commander which suddenly stopped operating! All the lights on the dash were flashing, then suddenly everything died and my car stopped. I went to a diagnostic center and was told it was an ignition problem. Has anyone else had this happen with similar results? Has this Jeep been recalled?
I have 07 commander - i love it however now i am having some issues. Engine is idleing - 2wks ago it just stalled - today all the gears lite up on the dashboard and i was giving it gas but it was going anywhere - - dx from dealer "Ignition Switch" of course not covered under warranty . This is ridiculous !
During a certain period of production, I think these 135,000 Jeeps were the unlucky ones to be recalled. It is important as it the safety of its owners rely on this case.
Bought mine with 25k miles. Has died on my 5 times in past 20k miles. All were shortly after I pushed the gas to start moving and let off to take a turn. This last almost killed me as it died turning into 50 mph traffic.
I have had my Jeep for alittle over a year and had problems for the last 3 months, first the car would not turn on but, all lights everything worked, so i took it into dealership, they could not find the problem finally they changed the starter and charged about $400 then it worked ok for almost a month in a half and now the car will not start at all, but, with the keys off and all the lights in the front come on one turns off first slowly then the other and so on, very weird, so i am taking it back. So sick of the car, no wonder they discontinue making it! Very upset
I purchased a used 2008 Jeep Commander in Apr 2012 with excessive miles but loved the look of the vehicle so I bought it. Since then the vehicle has stalled twice while sitting at stop light and as of this evening it shut down on me while driving 70 and 65 miles per hour on a busy Texas highway. Fortunate for me traffic was light this evening. Twice this evening in less than 45 minutes this happened. the Electronic Throttle Control light did not light up until I coasted to the side of the highway, put the jeep in park, took out the key and then placed it back into the ignition. This is a dangerous vehicle and will be taking this back to determine what my options are for getting into a different SUV.
The engine is a very essential part of all vehicles and this does not leave out the jeep commander. Thank you for the important information you have shared. As a jeep beginner am humbled. TeraFlex Suspension
My 2006 Jeep Commander seems to be having 3 different issues. The differentials lock/shift on their own, it has stalled at slow speed twice now, and the lights do flicker on and off. None are related and all happen on their own.
Non stop issues. I have an '08 with 60k miles. I have had power issues. The shifter was replaced. Then I had issues getting the car to start. The dealer had it and couldn't figure it out. As soon as I got in, same problem. They figured it was the other keys on my key ring pulling down on the key causing it to lose contact and power. Still having issues with the car starting. The other day it shut down while I was driving. Completely lost power radio rests. One of the engine cylinders went this winter. Money pit!!! I still own on the car and can't trade it in and can't sell it because of the issues with it.
We have a 2007 as well and while driving all the dash lights went on and when pressing in the gas it would not move. We have replaced the starter 2x and just replaced the fuel pump and still it is not starting. It is not giving any codes on the computer. I am at a total loss as what to do.

My '06, 5.7Hemi Commander stalled once at a stop sign.
Another time the radio went dead for no reason - I popped the fuses out and back in and everything was fine.
4.7L Commander lost power oce while driving down the road. None of the electric seemed to go down, simply no throttle response.
